Karajan Centenary Celebration on “New at Noon”

August 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Herbert von Karajan is listed in the Guinness Book as the best-selling classical artist of all time, with perhaps 200 million of his recordings having been sold all over the world.

Karajan was born in Mozart’s hometown of Salzburg, Austria, in 1908. His conducting career was a long one, beginning in the days of 78 rpm records and ending early in the digital age.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the great conductor’s birth, EMI has just released an 8-CD (!) set of Karajan’s finest recordings from the LP era. Listen this week to “New at Noon” for a generous sampling, as Karajan conducts works by Wagner, Brahms, Sibelius, and Richard Strauss.
